Jesus and Secular Culture – Professor Graham Maddox
Graham Maddox is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at UNE and a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. He taught Politics at UNE for many years and was for twelve years Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He is a life member of Clare Hall, Cambridge, and the Center of Theological Inquiry at Princeton University.
Some of the greatest writing on the idea of democracy emerged as Europe was threatened by Nazi Germany. At the centre of that literature were documents that strongly associated the democratic polity with Christianity. Of course, one cannot have a ‘Christian democracy’, because the focus of ideal democracy is rule for and by all citizens, regardless of creed, education level or socio-economic status.
